The world’s largest porn site has announced that users can now activate subtitles for around 1,000 of its movies. The step is intended to make it possible for deaf and hearing-impaired viewers to enjoy these movies in their entirety.
In the long term, other films will also be subtitled. For the start, the 1,000 most-watched clips from different categories have been subtitled. Among the categories included are »Popular among women«, gay, bisexual and transsexual porn.
Corey Price, VP at Pornhub, comments on the launch of the program: »By integrating our new closed captioning category, we are now able to render some of our most popular adult content more enjoyable for our users who are hearing impaired. We encourage them to check out our newest category and provide feedback, which is especially important as we seek to continue to offer content with the differently-abled user in mind.«
Price points out that hearing impairment is not a niche problem. In the US alone, the problem affects 38 million people. However, since Pornhub has a global audience, the potential need for subtitling of content is likely to be much greater.
Pornhub’s range for the deaf and hearing-impaired is an extension of its program for the visually impaired, which has been in existence since 2016. The category for blind people and people with eye diseases is called »Descriptive Video«. Launched in 2016, it offers audio descriptions of the most popular Pornhub videos.
Both programs have been developed by Pornhub’s own »Pornhub Cares« department. It also developed services that provide people with limited vision captions with bigger texts, higher color contrasts and specific shortcuts allowing easier navigation on the platform. The department is also committed to community causes such as the conservation of pandas, sexual education for retirement and nursing homes, and the annual Pornhub Cares Scholarship, which provides $25,000 to students.
