The eagerly awaited first installment of the Pornhub Awards was held last week in Los Angeles. It was directed by Kanye West and hosted by porn star Asia Akiro. So the big question is: was it any good? And who are the big winners?
It’s a bit doubtful whether Pornhub did itself a favor by having its first big award show produced by Kanye West. After all, the egomaniacal superstar is obviously not quite healthy mentally. His public statements and behavior suggest this, as does the strange fact that as a porn fan and African American he supports the most controversial president of the USA of all time, Donald J. Trump, a man who is not only described by many as a racist, but is also considered a threat to the entire sex industry.
And as was to be expected, the event was also an uncompromising ego show for Kanye West. Not only did he celebrate the world premiere of his new song at the event, the actual stars of the evening had to dress in textiles from his Yeezy fashion label and follow the aesthetics of the unconventional rap star.
Even the trophies for the winners of the evening were strangely designed by Kanye West. The three-hour event was therefore a rather shameful PR stunt for the musician.
One could almost think that the seemingly confused rap star simply used the event to promote his new song to a global audience.
Porn star Asia Akira appeared topless to present through the evening. Sexy, of course, but hardly befitting as an appreciation for the industry.
The widely advertised live stream was not available on Pornhub’s website, at least from Germany, and remained without a digital footprint. Searching on Pornhub for “Pornhub Awards 2018” led to nothing, the elaborately set up site pornhub.com/de/awards also remained completely without updating troughout the event.
All in all a disappointing first award show, that can only be taken seriously by people paid well by Pornhub’s Canadian parent company MindGeek. Since the group has ultimately driven numerous studios and producers out of business, the industry should seriously ask itself whether Pornhub events should really be sponsored in the future.
