One of the largest condom company in the world was forced to recall some of its products from the Australian market. The company worried that condoms from its Real Feel line might not be safe to use as there was a risk that the could split.
Durex was forced to recall Real Feel condoms after the company found that the product failed pressure tests in a simulated three-year shelf-life aging scenario. The company therefore couldn’t guarantee that the products are safe close to the end of their expiry date in 2021.
The Real Feel condoms that are affected have the batch number 1000432443 and their expiry date is January 2021. The products were distributed to retailers from May 8 to June 25 last year.
Durex issued a statement claiming that the company believes that only this batch number is affected and that there are no immediate safety concerns for anyone.
The problems in Australia though are not the first for Durex. The company was also forced to recall 10 production batches from distribution in the UK and Ireland as these condoms didn’t pass shelf life tests either.
The company said: »Our condoms are intended to provide a method of contraception and prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) through a non-latex barrier that offers a benefit to consumers sensitive to latex. Only for the batches of condoms affected by this issue, there could be an increase in the number of condoms that burst during application or use.«
